gps tracking system : types of systems available

There are two types of systems available on the market today: passive tracking systems and real-time systems. A passive unit maintains a record of every location it has been in a particular vehicle. This information can then be downloaded onto your computer and viewed using the manufacturer’s software, which was included with your tracking unit. Real-time systems allow you to view the unit’s location whenever you desire. These systems either use a web-based interface to view the unit’s position (i.e. logging on to the manufacturer’s website with a username and password given to you by the manufacturer of the unit) or the manufacturer may include software for such purposes.

Cost of GPS Tracking Systems.
GPS tracking systems can run anywhere from the low hundreds to a few thousand dollars. A good quality passive unit will cost approximately $300 dollars, depending on the options available on that particular unit. On the other hand, a basic real-time system will generally start at around $500 dollars. Both real-time and passive trackers are commonly cellular based systems, which use cellular towers in the surrounding area to upload data they receive from satellites. If tracking in a remote area, where cellular service is not available, is desired, a two-way satellite system would be necessary. These, however, are much more expensive to purchase and operate.

Simply put, GPS tracking use a system of satellites orbiting the Earth to find an approximate location of the receiver with in a few meters of its actual location. These systems are known for their accuracy and reliability, and can generally give you an accurate reading with in a few feet of your position.

Are GPS Tracking Systems Difficult to use?

If you really do your home work and research the product before you buy it, then you shouldn't have any difficulty when using your new system. However, out of the box some GPS Tracking systems can be more complicated or less complicated than others. Some require a power cable to be hard wired to the vehicle's power, while others will run of AA batteries. The key thing that you are looking for in your GPS Tracking Systems is flexibility and ease of recovery. You don't want something that is extremely difficult to place or recover, because it might compromise your ability to gather data.

gps tracking system : GPS Car Tracking System

There was a time not too long ago when vehicle security meant an alarm system that wailed an obnoxious noise. If the thief was able to steal the car, then recovery before it had been dissected for its parts was almost impossible. But with a GPS (Global Positioning System) car tracking system, a car can be tracked on a computer map at a central monitoring station. These systems can also notify the central operator if an airbag deploys.

1. Determine how much money you are willing to spend. Not only will you have to pay for the product itself, but you may also have to pay a monthly service fee, depending on the product you purchase.

2. Consider simpler tracking systems that do not employ GPS and do not charge a monthly fee. One such device is called Lojack. This system relies on two devices - a transponder and a receiver. The receiver is mounted to police cars, and the transponder is put inside your car. When you report your car stolen, the police send out a signal that activates the device in your car.

3. Consider midrange systems, such as the Teletracer by Teletrac. Teletracer does not use the GPS. However, when tripped, it transmits a signal ultimately received by a central monitoring station. There is a monthly fee for Teletracer.

4. Think about the GPS tracking systems offered by such companies as ATX Technologies and RoadTrac. These systems use the GPS satellite network to track your car on a computer screen. Some of these systems also include a cellular phone for verbal communication with the operator at the central station. The cellular phone also allows the operator to listen in on what is happening in the car, an ideal feature if you are being car jacked. Moreover, some of these systems include a "panic button" to alert the operator at the central station that there is a medical emergency and help is required. Some also include a feature that permits you to track your own car via the Internet. The technology also allows the system to monitor the operation of your vehicle so that the central-station operator can alert you to any mechanical problems. You can use the cellular phone to contact the central station to obtain directions to a destination. And the central station can unlock your car's doors if you lock your keys in the car.

5. Consider the cost of installation if you are on a tight budget. The installation of a Lojack or Teletracer system is not as complicated as that of a GPS system and costs less money.

6. Discover whether the installation staff at your retailer is skilled enough for a complicated job, such as a GPS system.

7. Consider the monitoring station and its operators. Have the personnel been trained? Are there redundancies if something should go wrong at the central station? Is there seamless integration of communication between the central station and emergency institutions such as hospitals or the police? Is there a good database on emergency institutions? Is there a good database of navigational information should you need to call the central station for directions to a destination? How good is the company's relationship with the various police departments around the country?

gps tracking system : GPS Technology Can Be Useful To You

If you have a job that requires as much traveling as mine does, or if you want to ensure your personal well-being wherever you go, you should look at your options for installing a GPS tracking system in your car. Nowadays, the tracking system is being included in more and more cars directly from the manufacturer. If your car was made before the wave of GPS standards, there are many outlets on the internet through which you can locate a GPS system that will fit your needs.

One of the best things about GPS technology is its ability to always find out what road you are on in the event that you get lost. If you ever need to map out a course for traveling, the GPS has course-planning functionality as well.

Another benefit of GPS is that you will be more protected from vehicle theft. Your GPS system will be able to assist the police in tracking down your car with practically no problem. Its exact location can be pinpointed every moment it’s on.

Many insurance companies offer reduced rates for those of us who purchase cars with GPS systems built in, or spend the money to get it installed. Having the system installed will pretty much pay for itself in the long run.

As I said before, many automobile producers now install GPS systems right off the bat. Usually the added feature doesn’t increase the total cost by a substantial amount. So if you’re looking to buy a new car, it’s a good idea to look for one with GPS pre-installed.

If you look online for GPS systems, you should be able to find them with no trouble. You can also look for systems in electronic stores and car specialty stores. They usually carry tracking systems to their customers, and most stores will also offer installation services for a miniscule fee.

As I have demonstrated, there are countless benefits to having a GPS system installed in your car. So if you are considering buying a new car, I encourage you to look for a car including a GPS tracking system. If you already have a car, you might consider installing a system to your current vehicle for the benefits I have shown. With a GPS system installed in your car you can’t go wrong.

GPS Tracking System: 3 Effective Uses To Consider

Some of the available GPS tracking software packages today enable the user to interact with the tracked unit in a number of ways. Thus, the communication goes both ways so that from a base station, the user can check the status of its target object and send new instructions to it like remote commands if necessary.

One of the most well-known and widely used applications in the field of global positioning is the GPS tracking. In the first place, a GPS tracking system uses GPS to identify the location of a person, vehicle and pet. It also records the position at regular intervals in order to create a track file or log of activities. The recorded information can then be stored within the GPS tracking unit, or it may be transmitted to a central location or internet connection computer. This transfer can be done through the use of a cellular modem, two-way radio, or satellite.

A GPS tracking system actually has a number of uses. In this article I will discuss mainly three of the well-known uses of this GPS application.

1. As mentioned earlier, a GPS tracking system is used to track pets. Well, this idea is relatively new, so there are not a lot of choices and the technology can be pricey. But, I have a few samples of GPS tracking devices used to track pets:

• GPS Pet Tracker X5000 by Micro Tech –

This device is now marketed to the owners of dogs and cats, not only in the US but in many other parts of the world. According to its proponents, this unit sends its location information over the GSM cellular network and will send SMS messages to three phone numbers at intervals of two to 120 minutes. Also, the user can call the tracker to obtain the information.

• Pointer Dog-GPS by Pointer Positioning Solutions –

This device is made primarily for hunting. It consists of two devices, the sender and the hunter’s map. The Sender is placed on the dog’s harness, while the hunter’s map is for the dog owner. The hunter’s map has a GPS so the hunter can see his or her position on the map screen, as well as the position of the dog. The hunter can even listen to what’s going on at the dog’s location.

2. Today, a number of GPS tracking systems intended for most mammals and larger birds are highly available. Perhaps the reason for this development is that wildlife researchers need to determine the travel patterns of the wild animals as this is very critical to study and preservation. Well, some of the available system intended for this purpose have two-way communication which permits the user to gather information on demand or re-program the device while it is still on the animal.

3. Most GPS tracking systems function by creating a geofence around a company’s assets like construction equipment. The systems can be activated over the telephone or by computer. When the asset travels outside the perimeter, an alarm is then immediately sent to a dispatch center. The police are then notified and able to track down the missing equipment, often within an hour.

In today’s advanced technological world, GPS tracking is fast becoming a staple in society. It is but another high potential growth area for GPS applications. Perhaps this is because there are so many uses for these devices. In fact, with ever smaller dimensions and weights coupled with the availability of solar cell power, these GPS tracking systems can be used in growing number of cases. By Dean Shainin
