gps tracking system : types of systems available

There are two types of systems available on the market today: passive tracking systems and real-time systems. A passive unit maintains a record of every location it has been in a particular vehicle. This information can then be downloaded onto your computer and viewed using the manufacturer’s software, which was included with your tracking unit. Real-time systems allow you to view the unit’s location whenever you desire. These systems either use a web-based interface to view the unit’s position (i.e. logging on to the manufacturer’s website with a username and password given to you by the manufacturer of the unit) or the manufacturer may include software for such purposes.

Cost of GPS Tracking Systems.
GPS tracking systems can run anywhere from the low hundreds to a few thousand dollars. A good quality passive unit will cost approximately $300 dollars, depending on the options available on that particular unit. On the other hand, a basic real-time system will generally start at around $500 dollars. Both real-time and passive trackers are commonly cellular based systems, which use cellular towers in the surrounding area to upload data they receive from satellites. If tracking in a remote area, where cellular service is not available, is desired, a two-way satellite system would be necessary. These, however, are much more expensive to purchase and operate.
